As of April 9, 2025, President Donald Trump stole $185 million in disaster relief from Louisianans, calling it “wasteful and ineffective.”
The decision comes from Trump terminating the law he originally signed in 2020 that provides FEMA money for disaster relief. The law, Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program, offsets natural disaster costs to residents. The BRIC program pays for building levees, raising homes, and flood prevention here in Louisiana.
President Biden increased BRIC’s funding since it was enacted in 2020 and the $2.03 billion in funds would be available through 2025. Until Trump cut it. As a result, 34 current applications for disaster funding will be ignored.
